IBM ThinkPad x30 on Linux Information | |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer/Product | IBM ThinkPad x30 |
| Part Number | 2672-4BU |
| Build Date | 2003-02 |
| Report Date | 2003-02 |
| CPU Type/Speed | Mobile Pentium III, 1.2GHz |
| Video Res/Size/Type | 1024x768, 12.4 inch, TT |
| OS Installed | KRUD 8.0 |
| OS Notes | I haven't run an install on the system, I just moved my current 40GB drive over from my ThinkPad x20 that this system replaces. Kudzu on re-start properly detected the changes and did the right thing. I would expect an install to work without any problems. |
| XFree Version | 4.2.99.3-20030115.0 |
| XFree Config File | XF86Config |
| XFree Notes | I built and installed the new beta XFree RPMs from Red Hat because I had experienced some video lock-ups during trying to run "redhat-config-xfree86" at first. However, I was never able to successfully run the "redhat-config-xfree86" tool -- I finally had to tweak the settings manually. I would suspect that Red Hat 8.0 stock XFree would work, but I'm using the XFree from the 8.1 beta. The video in this laptop is Intel i830-based, and really isn't up to industry standards for any sorts of 3D. I don't tend to use 3D very much, but at times it would be nice -- mostly for games... The 1.2GHz CPU makes software 3D better than on my previous laptops, but nowhere near as good as most other laptops these days. |
| Sound Card/Driver | Intel Corp. 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Audio (rev 02) using i810_audio driver |
| Sound Notes | The audio worked just fine. No problems so far. One note is that the audio output is much "louder" than previous ThinkPads I've had. When connected up to a stereo, older ThinkPads required that I turn up the volume on the stereo much higher than normal for reasonable levels. The x30 seems to be pushing out more power. In /etc/modules.conf I have: "alias sound-slot-0 i810_audio". |
| Modem/Driver | Intel Corp. 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Modem (rev 02) |
| Modem Notes | I have not tried the modem, but apparently the ltmodem code lists it as an unsupported modem. I was able to find a report that someone installed the ltmodem code on a similar modem and was able to talk to the modem, but could not get it to dial. I tried the 8.26a9 version and was unable to get it to recognize the modem at all. |
| Ethernet/Driver | Intel Corp. 82801CAM (ICH3) PRO/100 VE (LOM) Ethernet Controller (rev 42) using eepro100 |
| Ethernet Notes | I've run some minimal testing of the ethernet and it's worked fine. I've set it up in /etc/modules.conf with: "alias eth1 eepro100". I couldn't get ethernet to show up as anything but eth0, so I moved wired to eth1 -- fine since I usually use wireless anyway. |
| Wireless/Driver | Harris Semiconductor Prism 2.5 Wavelan chipset (rev 01) using orinoco_pci |
| Wireless Notes |
The stock 2.4.20 kernel drivers for this card work, but will lock up when
sending larger volumes of data through it. I haven't tried the Red Hat
kernels, only a custom built 2.4.20. I was able to resolve this problem by
downloading the drivers at:
I downloaded version 0.13b, and have since not had any lock-ups of the
built-in wireless card. I have the following in my /etc/modules.conf:
"alias eth0 orinoco_pci", then I just set up eth0 in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 with:
DEVICE=eth0 BOOTPROTO=dhcp ONBOOT=yes |
| APM Notes | So far, APM looks solid. I've done about half a dozen BIOS suspends and they've worked just fine. |
| PCMCIA Notes | I've used the Merlin C201 wireless net card and have had no problems with it. |
| Misc Notes | The "ThinkPad" button can be read using the "tpb" program. This program also does things like display on-screen information about the volume level, brightness of the screen, and ThinkLight status. I haven't tested the built-in firewire. I have no firewire devices... While the video is just barely adequate (because of lack of 3D acceleration), I probably wouldn't change my mind... The x24 has a Radeon video chipset, but the x30 has the ability to take a second battery for a total of 9 hours of run-time, and really beefy looking hinges for the display. Since the display hinges are one of the things that failed on the x20 that this replaced... Also, the keyboard seems even better than the usual high standard that IBM maintains. Maybe I'm just imagining that, since the keyboard in my x20 was having problems. I type a lot... The new keyboard has great feel though... |
