Eric Raymond Linux Journal The Ultimate Linux Box 2001: How to Design Your Dream Machine

"I realize that favorite Linux distribution is a religious war, but I can't resist putting in a plug for mine -- KRUD Linux from Kevin Fenzi and the good folks at tummy.com. Subscribing to KRUD gives you a Red Hat base, plus a monthly update including all security fixes and a tasty selection of additional programs and tools."

I still think that this is the best value for Linux around. I'm a diehard subscriber.

I subscribe to KRUD because it saves me money. So far, the six months of my subscription to KRUD have covered Red Hat's release of 7.0, 7.1 and now 7.2. Buying each of these when RH released them would have cost $360 (I buy the Deluxe or Professional version), not to mention the $80 a month cost for RH Network to keep the five computers I have up to date. With the $65 cost of a year-long KRUD subsciption, I figure I'm at least $775 ahead.
Which is a lot of money for beer and pizza ....

KRUD is based on the ever popular Red Hat distribution with a couple of twists thrown in. Twist number one is that KRUD is a subscription based distribution. Unlike other big boys, KRUD subscribers get a monthly KRUD update mailed to them. Updates include all the original Red Hat errata, security updates for all included packages, as well as new packages and utilities Kevin has dug up. Even when Red Hat runs though a major revision change, KRUD is right there behind them.

Since subscribing to KRUD, my workstations are never more out of date than the last KRUD release. This is the way Linux was meant to be distributed.

A mini review of KRUD 7.2. KRUD is an acronym for Kevin's Red Hat Uber Distribution. An initial installation of KRUD looks just like a typical Red Hat Linux installation. But with a modest subscription to KRUD, you also get a monthly CD with all the errata and package updates for your Red Hat Linux installation. KRUD is produced by tummy.com.
So when I decided that my work system needed an upgrade, I decided to get some KRUD. I initially installed KRUD 6.2, it didn't take very long and then I had a stable system, but the 7.2 discs beckoned and I went for it. The anaconda installation was smooth. I was able to easily configure my network. Before long I had the newly upgraded system I'd been looking for, with Nautilus, a Mozilla browser, ext3 filesystem, and lots of other good stuff. And, I didn't have to go browsing all over the net to get the latest security updates, those get installed as the system is built. Check this space next week for a better list of KRUD features.

It's just plain convenient! I could download stuff myself but when someone else does the work it's a no-brainer :)
Being able to just pop in the monthly CD and do an rpm freshen makes life with Linux that much more fun.

an excellent repackaging of Red Hat with fixes and additions.

Bless you, just repaid the cost of my subscription again...

Following my receipt of an email from Redhat offering their Network subscription service at what seems a good price of $60/year, I would like to let you and your organization know that I am going to stick with your subscription service (and just because I just joined is not a factor). The convenience of putting a cd-rom in and upgrading beats the tar out of downloading for hours at end. Please keep up the good work.

I love KRUD for it's convenience (new up to date CDs every month, a fresh install is a patched install) and some extras thrown in for fun.
"some" extras?? I took a look at the list. It's a MASS of extras. I'd be hurtin' bad if I had to go back to stock RedHat.

We use Linux systems with a 2.4.9-7 kernel based on the KRUD 7.2 distribution, and 2.2.17-14 kernel based on the KRUD 7.0 distribution.
